5 Essential Tool Safety Rules Every Young Tradesperson Should Know

Here are five essential rules we teach from day one.

1. Always Wear Your PPE

Personal Protective Equipment isn't optional. Safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and hard hats exist for a reason. No task is so quick that it's worth skipping your PPE.

2. Inspect Your Tools Before Every Use

A damaged tool is a dangerous tool. Before using any hand tool or power tool, inspect it for cracks, frayed cords, loose parts, or damage. If something looks wrong, tag it out and report it.

3. Keep Your Work Area Clean

Cluttered work areas cause accidents. Trips, falls, and misplaced tools are among the most common causes of workplace injuries. A clean workspace is a safe workspace.

4. Never Bypass Safety Guards

Power tools have guards for a reason. Never remove or bypass a blade guard, safety switch, or protective cover. These features exist to protect you from serious injury.

5. Know Your Emergency Procedures

Every job site has emergency procedures. Know where the first aid kit is. Know how to shut off power and gas. Know who to call in an emergency. Being prepared is part of being a professional.
